Dr. Safstrom will explain the origin & development of Swedish social democracy. While other European countries vacillated between radical & conservative political parties, Sweden managed to avoid totalitarian regimes & maintained democratic dialog & dissent.
By looking at the career of one politician in particular, Paul Peter Waldenstrom, Dr. Safstrom will identify how Sweden's 19th-century religious awakening contributed to the development of a new political order.
