Chaos and Complex Systems Seminar
Bach's integration of complexity and simplicity
Tuesday, March 7, 2017
4274 Chamberlin Hall
Trevor Stephenson, Harpsicordist, will use examples from Bach’s The Well-tempered Clavier to show how Bach achieves clarity within extremely complex systems; how he deals with fugue subjects that approach a-tonality; how he breaks down and rebuilds a sense of key; and how the unique tuning (tempering) method for the The Well-tempered Clavier assists in giving each piece a unique acoustic color. He will bring his 17th-century Flemish harpsichord for the presentation.
