Vitaphone was the first widely adopted recorded synchronized sound film technology, and Warner Bros. used it in the production of short films that featured an extraordinary variety music, comedy, and vaudeville performances. In showcasing the work of Yiddish theater stars, Western swing stars, jazz musicians, and African-American entertainers, Vitaphone played an important role in circulating vernacular American music styles and cultures across the country.
