Description
Known for their Austrian sense of humor, unique instruments and virtuosic brass artistry, Mnozil Brass is a septet that specializes in classical music, jazz standards and popular hits. Between songs, the group adds in elements of slapstick comedy and witty scenes which have elicited comparisons to the likes of Monty Python by numerous critics. The ensemble, founded in 1992, was nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award, and won the Salzburger Stier Cabaret Price in 2006. It has recorded eight albums and toured internationally to great acclaim. Their quirky instruments, such as the customized rotary valved trumpet or the bass trumpet, and their mix of humor with music make them a one-of-a-kind band. There will be a pre-concert lecture given by Norman Gilliland at 7 pm in the Festival Room (lower level of Memorial Union). Gilliland has hosted and produced a variety of programs on Wisconsin Public Radio since 1983, including Morning Classics, the Midday, Old-Time Radio Drama, and University of the Air. He reads for Chapter A Day and does interviews for Wisconsin Public Television’s University Place Presents. He’s written two books about classical music–Grace Notes for a Year and Scores to Settle–plus three novels, and, since 1990, has been the emcee of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra’s Concerts on the Square.MUSIC LINKS, NEWS, REVIEWS & MORE: Website, Billings Gazette, The Daily Item, ArtsBham.comIf you like Mnozil Brass, you may also enjoy King Sunny Ade and His African Beats, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and Terence Blanchard Featuring the E-CollectiveVIDEOS
