Description
Jason De León has trekked through unforgiving deserts in Mexico and Southwestern America, examining abandoned personal items like backpacks, water bottles and clothing, to provide a chillingly intimate look into the experience of undocumented immigrants who seek to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. De León, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, directs the Undocumented Migration Project, a research program that uses ethnography, archaeology, forensic science and visual media to understand the nuanced, violent social process of clandestine migration between Latin America and the United States. De León’s work has been showcased in the Detroit Museum of Contemporary Art exhibit “The State of Exception” and by popular media such as NPR , The New York Times , Vice Magazine , Bustle , Fox News , and Latino NBC . De León is on the Academic Board for the Institute for Field Research, a nonprofit organization operating over 42 field schools in 25 countries across the globe, and is on the Board of Directors for the Colibrí Center for Human Rights, a nonprofit working to end migrant deaths and suffering on the U.S.-Mexico border. National Geographic named De León an Emerging Explorer in 2013, and De León received the Margaret Mead Award in 2016 for his book “The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail” (University of California Press 2015). The nominating board for the Margaret Mead Award describes De León as “a brilliant young anthropologist and a charismatic public intellectual [whose work] covers a whole new range of insights in the border between the US and Mexico and undocumented immigrants—a very important issue at this time”.
