SMALL TALK (2016) | Saturday, April 14 @ 3:00 PM Taiwan | 88 min | NR | DCP | Dir. Hui-Chen Huang A family story of a very special kind. The mother earns a living as a spirit guide for the deceased at their funerals: she was never at home, always out and about with her girlfriends instead. The daughter now goes to great lengths to attempt to understand her mother. A cosmos opens before us, one which manages to be of universal cultural significance and extremely intimate at the same time. Maso Chen THE SILENT TEACHER observes the two-year journey of a family and a medical school, when a long embalming process corresponds to a husband’s extended grief, but also the strength and hope he finds in her post-mortem contribution as a “silent teacher.” Because there is no funeral, the family doesn’t know where her spirit is. The husband travels frequently up the island to visit and comfort her body in Taipei. His optimism throughout is a startling but uplifting beacon of light through a uniquely painful period in their lives. Meanwhile, the medical students prepare their own rituals of gratitude.   Maso Chen’s incredibly moving documentary calls for us to treat human beings with respect not only after they have died, but also while they are living. We can’t know what happens after we go, but we can still do some good in the world before, and after, we are gone. –James Paguyo CAPE NO. 7 (2008) | Monday, April 30 @ 7:00 PM Taiwan | 129 min | Dir. Wei Te-sheng An unusual group of people in a village on the coast of Taiwan form a band to perform at a beach concert, while the lead singer searches for the intended recipient of 7 lost love letters.  (Source: IMDb) EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN (1994)  | Tuesday, May 1 @ 7:00 PM Taiwan | 124 min | PG | BluRay | Dir.
