For more than a decade, First Wave scholars have excelled in a wide range of artistic disciplines, from spoken word poetry and hip-hop music to contemporary dance and the visual arts. The program is billed as the first full-tuition scholarship for students interested in the hip-hop arts. The documentary combines personal profile stories and performances to show how this scholarship brings dozens of talented young artists to Madison, and how they use their talents to make a difference in the community. “The Louisville Lip: MC Muhammad Ali” is a documentary film about Muhammad Ali's influence on Hip Hop and how Black women shaped the culture. Featuring interviews with D.M.C. of Run, D.M.C, Kurtis Blow, Roxanne Shanté, Hip Hop scholars, Muhammad Ali's friends and family, and various Hip Hop artists. The project claims Muhammad Ali as Hip Hop's first MC, citing the release of his spoken word album "I Am the Greatest" in 1963 and his use of rap and a Hip Hop persona to market himself as a boxer.  This event presents a teaser of the full length feature to come. This event is presented in collaboration with the 6th Annual JVN Day Hip Hop Festival: The Root and Wisconsin Public Televison. This event is intended for UW-Madison students, faculty, staff, Wisconsin Union members and their guests. Anyone can become a  Wisconsin Union member .
