Description
While representing only 7% of the surface area and 1.4% of the volume of Lake Michigan, Green Bay receives approximately one-third of the total nutrient loading within the entire Lake Michigan basin. Hypereutrophic conditions have been a persistent feature of Green Bay throughout most of the last century, but the occurrence of hypoxia or so-called "dead zones" was not widely recognized until recent studies mapped the extent of oxygen depleted bottom waters in the bay during the summer stratified
