An Aesthetics of Excess: Gangamma Jatara in Tirupati
- Date Nov. 5, 2009
- Time noon.
- Location206 Ingraham Hall
- DescriptionJoyce Flueckiger, describes the purpose of Gangamma jatara: to satisfy and heat the goddess Gangamma, whose ugram is needed to protect Tirupati from illness. Ugram is often translated as anger, but in this context, excess may be a better translation. This aesthetics permits a wide range of individual experience of the jatara.
