How Tin Films Handle Stress

Event Details

Date
Thursday, March 21, 2013
Time
4-5 p.m.
Description
Carol Handwerker, Purdue University. Whiskers and hillocks have been observed to grow spontaneously from Sn thin films as a response to compressive stresses. Stress relaxation occurs by diffusion to specific grain boundaries in the plane of the film, leading to an out-of-plane relaxation, with hillocks being formed when grain boundary migration accompanies growth out of the plane of the film.
