Chaos and Complex Systems Seminar

Chemical selection and the origin of life

Event Details

Date
Tuesday, September 22, 2015
Time
12-1 p.m.
Location
Description
David Baum, UW Department of Botany, will discuss how something capable of evolving by selection could arise spontaneously in autocatalytic metabolic networks. Such adsorbed, life-like chemical complexes would be expected to yield cell-like entities. This theoretical framework for explaining the origin of life suggests experiments that select for collective mutual catalysis on complex chemical mixtures associated with mineral surfaces.
