Description
This presentation focuses on the contemporary forms of an emblematic and historic Mesoamerican garment – the huipil (a handwoven tunic-like woman’s garment with pre-Columbian origins). In recent decades, indigenous groups have begun to adapt their textiles to reach an expanded market. Using traditional backstrap looms, weavers combine ancient and modern sources of inspiration to create innovative designs and forms of huipiles. Carolyn will give a weaving demonstration on the backstrap loom.
