The Joey Alexander Trio featuring Dan Chmielinski and Ulysses Owens, Jr.
Jazz pianist Joey Alexander’s father discovered his ability to pick out the melody of Thelonious Monk’s “Well, You Needn’t” at the age of 6. Now at 12-years-old, this young musician has already been described as being “on his way to becoming one of the greatest jazz artists of our time” by The Today Show. Joey marked his recording debut with the May 2015 release of “My Favorite Things,” which was nominated for two 2016 Grammy Awards, including Best Instrumental Jazz Album. Precise technique and profound interpretations come through his performances of classic songs such as Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” though he also plays Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “It Might As Well Be Spring” and “Over the Rainbow.” Joey’s natural talent and musicality have led him to not only perform at the 2016 Grammys, where he received a standing ovation, but at Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Jazz Foundation of America at the Apollo Theater. Joey was also invited by UNESCO to play in honor of jazz icon Herbie Hancock and he has also performed in numerous jazz festivals around the world, including the international improvisation contest in Odessa, Ukraine, where he beat 200 jazz professionals from 17 countries. His audacious energy and powerful imagination have made him a musician with “a sophisticated harmonic palette and a dynamic sensitivity” according to The New York Times.
