Description
Join the Wisconsin Union in the Bastille Day Celebration weekend, in partnership with La Fete de Marquette.
The Cajun Strangers are based out of Madison, WI, and are one of the Midwest's premier Cajun music bands. They have two CDs out on the Swallow Records label and both have won an award called Prix Dehors De Nous (The Best Outside of US) from the Cajun French Music Association in Louisiana. They primarily play the traditional Cajun dance music from Southwest Louisiana and try to reproduce this energetic style as closely as they can to the bands that play down South. The music consists of two steps, waltzes and blues, and is sung mostly in Cajun French. The Strangers have recently revamped their lineup, and the band includes two "actual Cajuns" now. The drummer is Chris Courville, from Lafayette, LA, who toured for many years with cajun groups in Louisiana, and the guitarist is Scott Kiker, who grew up in a French speaking home in the Lafayette area and has run the popular jug band Boo Bradley for many years. In addition, they have accordionist Tom "Big Nick" Nickel, who ran the popular Milwaukee based band, Big Nick and the Cydecos, and longtime Cajun Strangers, fiddler Brian O'Donnell, guitarist Colin Baszali, and the legendary Jim Schwall, of the Seigal Schwall Blues Band fame, on bass.
