In 1971 under federal mandate two Virginia high schools, one of all black students one of all white students, are forced to integrate and form T.C. Williams High School. The white football coach is replaced by a black coach, Coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington). The new racially integrated team struggles to work together at first, but tensions are alleviated following their two-week training camp. After their return though they still have the rest of the school and town largely against their racial desegregation. However, the team's success brings them and their town closer together as they win game after game and bring their school to the playoffs.
