DESCRIPTION:*Note: actual end time may vary.* \n View the Our Shared Futu
re heritage marker at Union South as it "tours" campus.&nbsp\;&nbsp\; On
June 18\, 2019\, UW–Madison dedicated a new heritage marker which recogn
izes and acknowledges the Ho-Chunk as the Indigenous people on who’s lan
d the university was built. The heritage marker\, titled Our Shared Futur
e \, reads in full: The University of Wisconsin-Madison occupies ancestral
Ho-Chunk land\, a place their nation has called Teejop since time immemor
ial. In an 1832 treaty\, the Ho-Chunk were forced to cede this territory.
Decades of ethnic cleansing followed when both the federal and state gover
nment repeatedly\, but unsuccessfully\, sought to forcibly remove the Ho-C
hunk from Wisconsin. This history of colonization informs our shared futur
e of collaboration and innovation. Today\, UW-Madison respects the inheren
t sovereignty of the Ho-Chunk Nation\, along with the eleven other First N
ations of Wisconsin. -2018- Look for the heritage marker in locations arou
nd campus throughout the year including Memorial Union & Union South.\n\nU
