After a lon g-term isolation in the social vacuum\, long-pressed and unexpressed emoti ons become a platform for reexamination to take place -- of human existenc e\, its relation with nature and the connection between our mentality and physicality. To Pu\, the process happens intensely as well as organically when a certain degree of detachment from human society appears. It forces individuals’ consciousness into a semi-spontaneous state that resembles self-drowning\, which Pu recognizes as Floating. While floating\, we eager ly and desperately cast our gaze to nature for protection\, refuge and uni on as if we are their vulnerable and humble children. However\, in this ga ze\, there is also arrogance and rejection -- that we believe humans are c omparable to nature and we could live independently from it. It is in such conflict\, such inconsistency\, the tragic and poignant nature rooted in humanity has been awakened and reminded\, which inevitably leads to the fu rther division between us and nature.” Floating will be on display in th e Main Gallery from October 5th - November 20th. People from all ages and ethnicities led by young black men and wome n congregated at the capitol to voice their frustrations about a system th at has led to the wrongful death of many black citizens at the hands of th e police. Calling for an abolition of the police\, the group numbering int o the thousands proceeded to take to the streets behind banners stating “Black Lives Matter” and “Community Control Over Police”. Even in the midst of a global pandemic\, nothing could stop these people from join ing the fight for equality. Names of black people slain by the police echo ed in the air. George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Trayvon Martin. For every nam e chanted\, there are thousands more that we do not know. However\, the fi ght did not end there. Nearly every day since the initial protest on May 3 0\, groups have been out on the streets fighting for black lives and the b lack community. Groups like Black Umbrella\, Link Madison\, Urban Triage\, Freedom Inc\, and Impact Demand have organized events for the benefit of the community. Not every event is a large-scale march. Sometimes education al events take place. Sometimes there is a kickback to allow people to dec ompress from the stress of the world. The important thing is that even wit hout the news coverage or the acknowledgement of the general public\, peop le are still in the streets till this day\, several months after the initi al catalyst. Young black leaders are making their demands known and gettin g their voices heard. We still here\, and we aren’t going anywhere until we have the change we need. This collection of images was captured over a 4-month time period and documents the leaders as well as the participants in the various protests and events around Madison. Images were created us ing both digital cameras as well as 35mm film." Kenechi Unachukwu is a fre elance photographer currently based in Madison\, Wisconsin. Kenechi first was drawn to photography by images documenting the underground bboy (break dance) battle scene. He began taking photos in that realm in 2017\, and ha s since branched out to street photography\, landscapes\, and portraits. A s he develops his style\, Kenechi aims to both tell stories that have not been told\, as well as offer a fresh perspective on the things we see dail y.
