Description
Ida Jo is a singer, violinist and writer who uses music and creativity to promote wellness. Born and raised in the Midwest, Ida Jo’s musical style builds on a long history of blending rock, folk, and gospel music. Her music, led as always by her “innovative violin work and her soulful vocals” (AV Club), is expressive and groove-oriented and her songs are carefully crafted, meant to get at the heart of the humanity that connects us all. A violinist from a young age, Ida Jo employs a seldom heard technique that is the combination of a folk fiddle style called “chopping” and her extensive classical training. She is one of only a handful of violinists in the world to play in the style. It has been praised as "masterful and unexpected" (Emmie Music Magazine), "inventive yet accessible," (AV Club - Madison) and "avoiding rootsy fiddle or orchestral indie clichés" (The Isthmus). She’s been named WAMI Female Vocalist of the Year and MAMA Folk/Americana Performer of the Year. She has performed for Wanderlust and Kripalu as well as events such as Yoga Reaches Out. She’s been published in the Huffington Post and has presented at TEDx. "Her music is a gift, a present to those hoping to find clarity in their own lived experience." (Wanderlust) Ida Jo also holds the title Yoga Acharya (Master of Yoga) and serves as head teacher of Ghosh Yoga. She partners with Ghosh’s Yoga College of Kolkata, India and travels around the world to teach workshops and trainings. She has written and published four books on the Ghosh Yoga tradition and edited two historic manuscripts. She performs and teaches alongside Emmy award winning composer and multi-instrumentalist Scott Lamps.   This event is intended for UW-Madison students, faculty, staff, Wisconsin Union members and their guests. Anyone can become a  Wisconsin Union member .
