Description
During the sixties--before the age of social media--the way you reached people was by posting flyers on telephone poles, public bulletin boards and store windows.  Home-made signs and posters provided information for upcoming speakers, marches and events on campus and in nearby streets.  These signs were often simply handwritten one-sheets with little more than the date, time and location of the event, occasionally mentioning prominent speakers and musicians of the day.  "Signs of the Sixties" draws from the vast holdings of the UW-Madison Archives housed in Steenbock Library, drawing particularly from their extensive collection of posters, flyers and street art from Madison's decade of activism and cultural adventure.  These are some of the purest examples of grassroots information dissemination in a radical age.  This exhibition is collaboratively presented by the WUD Art Committee, The Madison Reunion and UW-Madison Archives, with artifact selection by Judy & Ben Sidran and David Null.
