DESCRIPTION:Beyond Sex Dimorphism: Within-Sex Variation and the Unflanged M
ale Orangutan. Sexually mature male orangutans come in two forms: flanged
males\, with broad cheek pads and a throat pouch\, and unflanged males\, w
ho delay these secondary sex characteristics. Early accounts cast unflange
d males as stress-induced alternatives that “sneak” as “female-sized
” and force matings. In this talk\, I turn to the skeleton to ask whethe
r those early descriptions hold up. I assign flanging status using an oste
obiographic method and present an unexpected pattern.\n\nCONTACT: 262-2866
