Description
"The boss fired the employee who is always late" invites the inference the speaker is conveying the lateness caused the firing. More familiar processes conveying extrasemantic content, such inferences do not arise in an attempt to rescue utterances from any kind of communicative failure. They arise from cognitive strategies for building mental models. This suggests extrasemantic enrichment have attracted the most theoretical attention are special cases of a more general and varied phenomenon.
