Twin sisters (both played by Olivia de Havilland) are at the center of a murder investigation. When the authorities – convinced one of the sisters is guilty – can’t determine whom to charge and call on a psychiatrist to employ a variety of psychoanalytical tests to solve the case. Siodmak’s proto-noir draws on the aesthetics of German Expressionism to represent characters’ mental anguish. (USA, 1946, 35mm, b/w, 85 min.) Preceded by Tulips Shall Grow (USA, 1942, 35mm, color, 7 min.).
