Description
Robert Mitchum is brilliant as a sinister self-proclaimed preacher who marries a young widow hoping to get his hands on the fortune left behind by her deceased, bank-robbing husband. The Depression-era landscape serves as the backdrop for screenwriter James Agee’s nightmarish allegorical fantasy that Pauline Kael called “one of the most frightening films ever made.” (Charles Laughton, 1955, 35mm, b/w, 93 min.) Preceding: Hearst Metrotone newsreel "News of the Day: Headline Highlights of 1955."
