Description
This lecture discusses Humboldt’s role between the Spanish empire and the American nation at the time of his visit to the U.S. in 1804. It analyzes the balance Humboldt struck between science and politics and his use of political connections offered by Spain and Jefferson’s cabinet, while the two nations used his scientific work for their own strategic purposes.
