First Steps Towards Modernizing NOAA’s Probable Maximum Precipitation – Analyzing High Resolution Ensemble Forecasts of US Summertime Precipitation Extremes

The 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law tasks NOAA with developing and implementing updated estimates of probable maximum precipitation (PMP). PMP provides an estimate of “how much it could possibly rain” in a given location, and is used to inform the construction, maintenance, and operation of the nation’s high-hazard infrastructure, namely nuclear facilities and high-hazard dams.
