Description
During the 2009-10 academic year, UW-Madison students' use of the terms "Coastie" and "Sconnie" drew national attention when The New York Times and other outlets cited "The Coastie Song," a hip-hop song by two UW students popularized on the Internet, for its potentially anti-Semitic lyrics and its implications for a perceived Coastie/Sconnie rift on campus. This forum will explore the history, contexts and contemporary meanings of the so-called Coastie/Sconnie phenomenon.
