Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s Three Times (2005) may look like a simple film with three installments portraying three flimsy times in the history of Taiwan. A closer look into the use of songs in this film by a director known for his subtle complexity will reveal that this film is not simple at all. The songs are a vital element in the film’s poetic weave of the themes of personal feelings, historical times, and film language not only within each story but in-between installments as well.
