Description
Ophüls constructed an entire Czech village to adapt Friedrich Smetana’s comic opera. When Marie’s parents “barter” her off to an unwanted suitor, she refuses to comply and runs off with the boy she loves. Things aren’t so easy, as she soon discovers that true love and money aren’t mutually exclusive. Ophüls’s successful but rarely screened second feature mixes dialogue both spoken and sung. In German with English subtitles.
