Description
Annette Dupont is forced into an arranged marriage and, unable to bear the burden, she inadvertently ruins the lives of three men: her husband, her childhood sweetheart and her adult lover. When she plans to marry off her own daughter to a rich suitor, the ghosts of all three join forces against their shared “tender enemy.” This complex reflection on woman’s position in society is considered Ophüls’s first mature work. In French with English subtitles. (France, 1936, 35mm, b/w, 69 min.)
