Urbanization is a megatrend of the 21st century, entangled with climate change and land use transitions. Our speaker will assess its scope as a force of global environmental change, specifically the loss of the world’s most fertile croplands and the rapid rise of GHG emissions that originate in urban areas. While solutions are feasible, institutional capacity and political will are often missing. Sustainable urbanization must be accompanied by an increase in resource efficiency.
