Join us at Afternoon Conversation Series (ACS) for an interesting conversation! ACS is a facilitated weekly experience put on by WUD Global Connections where you can engage in friendly conversations over different interactive themes presented each week. This week our topic of discussion will be "Asian Fetish: An Oriental FantasyAs the world celebrates 400th anniversary of Shakespeare, we explore the effects of literature and media on us. From having a “type” to countless anime and Manga posters, the common narrative of an Asian woman seems to be heavily sexualized. Often referred to as “Yellow Fever”, the Asian fetish is a very real phenomenon. An NPR survey along with OK Cupid in 2009 showed high preferences for Asian women from men of all races. Amongst homosexuals too, Asians men are stereotypes as being “Twink”, “Bottom” and submissive. But what are the origins of the Asian Fetish ? How has media contributed in the making of a stereotypical submissive Asian woman ? The questions around these are not just limited to sex and sexuality, but rather explore race and gender construct in our societies. Join us in the conversation with Prof. Leslie Bow, as we talk about the construct of gender and race in our societies.Come and join us for a relaxing Friday afternoon and make new friends. FREE Refreshments are served on a first-come, first-served basis each week—come early to ensure your treat! Our events are open to UW students, faculty and staff as well as Union members and their guests.
