Dr. Charles Zuker is recognized for his studies on the molecular biology, genetics and physiology of our senses, including phototransduction, mechanotransduction, and more recently, taste. Over the past several years, Zuker and collaborators identified the cells and receptors mediating all five basic taste qualities (sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami), and helped uncover the logic of taste coding, both at the periphery and in the brain.
