Staging films that are between narratives and documentary, Liza Johnson seems to push the medium in new ways. She concentrates on current subjects (New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, life in a small Ohio town, etc.) and, using local, amateur people from these places, she stages situations that are cinematic, complex and slightly inscrutable.
