Karl Scholz, Department of Economics, discusses the flawed, commonly used evidence and an alternate, computationally complex dynamic-programming approach that suggests that most households born before 1954 had net worth at or above their optimal targets in 2004. "Rules of thumb" are suggested that might result in more sensible financial planning advice.
