In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the global trade in Japanese green tea tied the economies of Japan and the midwestern United States together, turning the Midwest into a major export market for Japanese green tea and creating an intimate trade relationship between the Midwest and Japan. Robert I. Hellyer is an Associate Professor of History at Wake Forest University.
