Kim Nielsen, professor of disability studies & history at University of Toledo, will examine the question of determining human competency and its role in U.S. History. Using the life of Anna Ott - Madison's first female physician who was involuntarily committed to the Wisconsin State Hospital for the Insane - Nielsen will consider how sexism, racism, and ableism has and continues to affect our ideas about who is allowed to contribute to society.
