Paleoclimate reconstructions of pre-Hispanic Andean South America figure centrally in ongoing debates about the role of drought in the ‘collapse’ of the Tiwanaku state. I examine how non-elites living on the periphery of the Tiwanaku sphere of influence responded to both political and environmental stress.
