Neal Lane, professor at Rice University, former diretor of the National Science Foundation and former science adviser to President Bill Clinton, tells how President Obama has made it clear from his statements and actions that he considers advances in science and technology to be vital to the nation’s future and that policy should be informed by evidence and scientific understanding and help must come from the scientific community in a role some of us call the “Civic Scientist.”
