Lauren Stokes, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of History at Northwestern University. She is a historian of Modern Germany with a more specific focus on 20th century Germany, migration, race in Europe, and gender and sexuality. Her first book, Fear of the Family: Guest Workers and Family Migration in the Federal Republic of Germany talks about West Germans and how as they discussed “difference” after 1945, they sought out a self-consciously “Western” and liberal way to discuss difference.
