Description
Sardis was a major city of Turkey for millennia. A goal of archaeological research there is to understand the early phases of the site, when the Lydians came to control an empire, invented the world’s 1st coinage, & were intermediaries between the Mediterranean world and Mesopotamia. Although ancient Greeks wrote much about the Lydians, archaeology presents a different picture, forcing us to reevaluate what later Classical writers knew about this culture, & how modern scholars have been misled.
