Brian McNamara, University of Waterloo, Canada, describes how every massive galaxy in the Universe contains a massive black hole in its center. The origin of these black holes is still a mystery, but in recent years it has become clear that they are important players in the formation of the cosmos. McNamara will discuss the impact that these black holes have on their environment and where they come from.
