Understanding the role of storms on the Southern Ocean

Description
The Southern Ocean plays a vital role in how the ocean takes up and redistributes heat and carbon. The importance of this region is in large part set by the “Roaring Forties”, the strong zonal winds which drive the large-scale overturning. The continual passage of meteorological storms also brings periods of extreme winds, which have been linked with CO2 outgassing events. However, the role of storms in setting the Southern Ocean climatology and ventilation remains an important open question.
