Description
An exploration of the complex society experienced by German immigrants in antebellum New Orleans, a city known for its multicultural population and for being a center of slavery. Focusing on the year 1854, Huey juxtaposes the political editorials of a German paper, the Louisiana Staatszeitung, with a popular serial melodrama, "The Mysteries of New Orleans." Caroline Huey is Associate Professor of Germanic Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. For a link, email apetty@wisc.edu.
