Description
High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors were first developed in the late 1960’s, and were deployed commercially as power plants in the 1980’s. ‘Modern’ HTGRs feature passive heat removal to eliminate the need for active core cooling systems while generating electricity with a higher thermodynamic efficiency than that of light water reactors. In 2009, X-Energy was founded to build on this technological base and the company is on track to deploy bundles of these power plants in the early 2030’s.
