The Elevation of Protection: Civil Unrest and Biodiversity Conservation in Liberia

Liberia’s forests endured a military coup and civil war that collapsed centralized governance, turning forests into sites of conflict, resource exploitation, refuge, and survival. The talk argues that conflict has paradoxically benefited biodiversity conservation by enabling (inter)national conservation actors to promote conservation as the primary strategy for safeguarding forests, often at the expense of local communities.
