Ephraim Woods III, Colgate University, reports on research using probe molecule spectroscopy to characterize the surface environment of aerosol particles that model sea spray. Two complementary measurements, the probe molecule’s excited state spectroscopy and photoionization efficiency, characterize the electronic properties of the particle surface and monitor phase changes that are driven by changes in relative humidity.
