University of Minnesota musicology/ethnomusicology lecturer Scott Currie asserts that reports of the jazz avant-garde's death have been greatly exaggerated. He bases his conclusion on over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork with a contemporary community of improv musicians on New York's Lower East Side.
