Description
From Jacques Vaucanson's defecating duck machine to the large, mechanical Englishman-eating tiger produced for Tipu Sultan, automata have materialized desires and fears concerning the boundaries between humans, animals and machines. Jill Casid, comparative literature, looks at extraordinary 18th and 19th century automata to raise ethical and political questions pertinent to biotechnology and the bounds of the human today.
