Ann Smart Martin, Department of Art History, will discuss her recently published work concerning African Americans in the back country of Virginia during the 18th and 19th centuries. Using store account books, estate inventories and archaeological evidence of subfloor pits and re-worked artifacts, Martin has been able to discern use and meaning of material culture to Anglo-Americans and diasporic Africans.
