Knowledge is power. Prior to the printing press, control of textual knowledge meant control of manuscripts. Those who could interpret, manipulate and deploy that knowledge had power over others. From the 12th to the 14th centuries, physicians created a variety of textual technologies for that purpose in the medical marketplaces of Western Europe.
